Corner Series: Mia Linnman Home Favourites

Hello folks! We’ve been talking about sharing favorite corners in the homes of people who inspire us, along with their favorite personal “rule” or habit for having a happy healthy home. So we followed our own advice and started it…and now we’re excited to finally share the first results of little passion project. First up, the gorgeous Mia Linnmann.

Introducing: Mia Linnman, graphic + interior designer + blogger 

We’ve been following Mia for years now over on her blog. She’s “an interior and renovation (restoration) lover” whose clients include IKEA, where she worked on their catalogues. “I also love to paint, mainly horses in large formats.” (You can see & buy them here.) “At the moment I work as a graphic designer and also trying to keep my blog alive. I like to have small projects around the house and I love aesthetic but also cozy (homey) and unpretentious interiors.”

About Mia’s Favourite Corner

“My fav corner for the moment (yes, it changes) is this one in our bedroom space. it’s a new corner since we just changed some rooms and did some refurnishing. As we moved around, changing room for a lot of things we landed our bed in our former lounge area, a quite open space.”
I like it because it isn’t perfect and planned.
“In the messy part of the refurnishing, all our paperbacks ended up on this bench just for temporary storage. But I realized I liked it, I like it because it isn’t perfect and planned. Interiors can be too correct and matched and personally I think it can be boring.”
Mia’s Happy House Rule
My happy house rule is to add something that quite not correspond (match) with the other things or atmosphere in a room.
For example, if you have classy, old or rough interior add something temporary or ultra modern (if you like that of course) and if you have a new, modern space add something old with a history.
And don’t feel afraid to let you favourite personal stuff take place, it shows who you are and makes your home more unique.
But also, even if you have a lot of stuff, let some free space and air in between.

Weekend Sparks & Clean Your Refridgerator Day

Did you know it’s Clean Out Your Refrigerator Day on Saturday?

Well, now you do!

I often laugh that there seems to be a billion different “days” every year. I also laughed when I realised that unless there’s a sexy smeg you will almost NEVER see a fridge in a kitchen pic in a glossy magazine or pinterest. (Yet another reason to enjoy the inspiration but love where you are). But this weekend I realised there was “Clean Out Your Refrigerator Day” and I’m getting on the bandwagon. I’m even ignoring that it may have been started by some fridge co.

So folks, one of our first ever happy house rules was start with a corner – this weekend I challenge you to start with a particular corner – your fridge. Give it a loving clean out, wipe it down with some baking soda and water, and fill it up with some things that make you smile inside and out. Commit to adding things that make you smile and keep your body healthy. Heck, maybe go one step further and invite a friend round for something that’s in the fridge.

Challenge over, off you toddle to start!

On Living Lighter

How can you add lightness?

How can you let the light into your homes, bodies and lives?

We’ve been exploring living lighter this week, so today I’m ruminating on light, lighting and lightness.

As I tend to live in my head, I’m currently playing with sharing visuals and simpler words.

Below are some of my answers. Perhaps they resonate with some of yours, too.

How can we add light and be lighter in our homes and lives?

Some possible answers in words:

  • lighter materials; see-through materials, lighter colours and textiles.
  • reflective surfaces: mirrors, high gloss paint, glass
  • lighting: different warmth light-bulbs, change out light fixtures. Use up lights, down lights, ceiling lights, pendant lights, floor lamps, side lamps, string lighting.
  • light candles; light a fire.
  • lighter furniture
  • empty spaces
  • meditation
  • taking breaks
  • open and add windows, knock through walls, add skylights, add a conservatory or greenhouse
  • eat food that make us feel good, make happy memories in our homes
  • invite happy people over or people who make us laugh
  • add objects or art that make us laugh
  • filling our homes, bodies and lives with people and things + empty spaces that let us breathe and shine

Lighting: Just Add Light

I saw this quote earlier in the week and thought that the concept of ADDING lightness was a bit strange. I totally get it, but if you think about it, it is an oxymoron.  That said, I love the quote as it describes a lot of what Nat & I do here. We help people “add lightness” – in their homes and their lives. And we discovered it along the way by adding it ourselves.

How do you let the light in?

I used to carry the weight of our entire household on my shoulders.

ALL of it. Trying to be the best mother possible to my two kids (one at the time was still waking 4x per night & would not take a bottle), delivering as required in my high stress finance position, trying to grow my own coaching business, participating in boards and other groups as a volunteer, studying for my diploma in interior design, being responsible for our finances at home and all the household administration as well as renovations, all the while trying to stay looking good, be a great partner to my husband and keep up friendships across the globe.

I tried to have it all and do it all – by myself.

The weight of it almost crushed me. At the end of 2010, I got sick. I lay in my bed unable to function for two whole weeks which gave me a lot of time to think (in between sleeping). I was in so much pain that I vowed to NEVER go back to that kind of stressful way of living again, to let some things go and to ask for help.

I realised that I wasn’t superhuman after all.

I took a year off work to regroup and focus on what I wanted to do. Fast foward 4 years and a LOT of self work in between (also with Nat) and I have learned to let the light in. We started the same way that we start with clients – with physical action to literally shift the weight. A process of simplifying (my home and then my head) and decluttering – letting go of the to-do list, of unfinished projects, of one-sided / unhealthy relationships, of expectations (of keeping up or of what/who I should be) and then adding lightness.

I changed the colours in my home from fiery reds and yellows with dark browns to the lighter hues of light blues, sea greens, greys and pinks with white as a basis. The furniture got lighter too – out with the heavy wooden tables and solid sofas and in with lighter alternatives. I even started to dress lighter (and definitely wear a lot less black these days).

With hindsight I also realise that I brought more light in by literally bringing more lighting into the house (the sparkly shimmery kind) and there are now also mirrors in almost every room, to reflect as much light around this dark Dutch terrace house as possible. Many of our floors are white and I have recently been pondering going for white floors in the living area too.

The more light in here, the happier I am!

With the physical shifting of my house came much more though. As I have let go of the importance of things, they now actually feel less heavy.  I still have a family home full of stuff but I am no longer attached.  It is just stuff that is useful or makes me smile – I am still a huge fan of art and beautiful design and always will be. I am, however, worrying less about what other people think, what’s cool or trendy right now and focusing more on following my own inner light. I still occasionally fall into the trap of trying to keep up but soon realise that a purchase isn’t really me, and usually end up letting it go.

Nowadays, it’s the things that I love that have staying power (but I’m also OK when what I love changes too – life doesn’t stagnate, so why should our homes?). My work isn’t done, as there is still some weight now and then, but I am definitely living lighter (and happier).

So to bring my story back on point:

How could you add lightness? How could you let the light in?

Nat and I tell our clients to “just start with a corner” and that advice holds here too.  Pick a particularly dark one or one that bothers you perhaps, and think about how you could make it lighter – with actual lighting, lighter colours (or add bright art), mirrors, a lighter style of furniture, burning a candle etc.

Once you’ve done that, go spend some time there and contemplate the next corner that you’re going to let some light into. And while you’re contemplating, is there a corner of your life that you could add lightness to? A one-sided friendship you need to let go of, a project you need to finish (screw perfection) or simply let go of an expectation of how something should be? Start there. And repeat.

Friday Faves: Some Light, Bright & Fun For The Weekend

Hey lovelies,

Somehow a second week of September has flown by and we’re celebrating! Tip’s well into her #sugarfreeseptemer – and lost weight, too! Nat had a curious thing happen. She went to ride her bike to the café, but realised she was actually more excited to ride her bike than about the café! She’s doing a little happy dance that finally her new habit has become automatic (and even fun!)…Yup, Nat’s a gal who’s started to like riding a bike! (She’s still in a little bit of shock about it too.) What new habit do you want to create that will make you feel happier and lighter?

We’re on the hunt for a new name

Shocked? Yes, we were too, but hey, we do practice what we preach…you notice you’re at a turning point…you can ignore or it or you can say OK, let’s turn, let’s ask for help, let’s do this with ease and grace if we can! It’s been coming for a while now…we realised we have outgrown what we started out doing. And while “Apartment Diet” will likely be the name of what we hope to be a very profitable ecourse / decluttering / downsizing / get lighter type services, what we do and who we are for our clients is now bigger than that. Two things that keep coming up are that we help people move (move on, move homes literally, change careers/exit planning) and lighten the load (the literal and subconscious weight that comes with things hanging over our heads and in our homes and bodies). Friday Faves: Happy, Habits + Mmmmm

It’s been a big week focusing on habits. It’s so big we wrote three blog posts on it!

We shared our secret to breaking bad habits – and how to create + stick with new ones. You can do it in one swift move or in teeny baby steps or piggy-backing it to another habit. It doesn’t matter. The point is not that you’re committing to something new. It’s that you’re doing it!

September is around the corner and Tip’s doing sugarfreeseptember and Nat’ll be riding her bike more.

We’re also focused on apartment diet the business and one habit we are clear on putting out there to do more of the work we want to do and make this into a hugely profitable business – in all senses of the word profit! Think speaking, workshops, beautiful useful products, ecourse platforms and transforming homes, offices and lives around the world. And stuff we haven’t even thought of yet. We’ll be writing a bucket list when we kick our business gear up a notch next week (September 1st here we come!).

While we love working one-on-one we committed to growing this full time and that means sharing the magic that our processes generate more widely. So we are limiting our proven one-on-one Change your Space Change your Life process to just 8 clients per month til the end of the year. Each process costs $349 and includes 5 sessions over 5 weeks in person or online via email and Skype. This timing of 5 weeks is optimum because it’s roughly the time you need to make those big changes in your home or life, and make those new habits stick. Art: The Must Have Home Accessory

Did someone say art? This week’s Happy House Rules is a bit like last week’s plant challenge: when added to your home it has a HUGE impact in changing the atmosphere of your space and life.

And so it is with art. You don’t need to own a particular artist’s piece or subscribe to a particular style. The art we’re talking about is art in your home that’s personal and makes you smile, feel inspired or remember wonderful moments in your life. It needn’t be scary or unreachable (though of course we encourage you to dream about some original you think is awesome ;). We’d like to introduce you to the idea that living with art is great, and even better, it can be really be FUN.

1. How to NOT get overwhelmed

There is a lot of art out there so I can imagine that it is a daunting task to figure out where to start – the best suggestion I have is to look around the web, in museums, fairs, friend’s collections and start saving pictures of the types of things that catch your eye – you’ll notice a pattern after a while of the things you like which can help inform you on the type of art to buy.

2. You don’t have to commit: Lean It

Consider leaning your art up against the wall, a windowsill or on some magazines. Also nice if you are too scared to make holes in the wall or can’t hang your art because you’re in a rental. Don’t let that little detail stop you! Piero Gemilli’s place above should be inspiration enough to try it.

3. Buy (or paint or print) ONE BIG WOW piece

The above pic is also a great example of how 1 single piece of art can change the entire vibe of a space – just place your hand over the B&W face in the picture and see what happens. Interesting huh? The takeaway is, once piece CAN completely change the feeling of a room.  The paintings below are also a perfect example of how one piece can give your room the ‘wow’ factor it needs – in addition, they are huge relative to the size of the room – which is another designer trick that ups the fab stakes. Don’t be afraid to supersize your art, especially if your space is small! I should know, my place is narrow but the second pic below is in my home. It actually makes the space feel bigger.

4. Consider Poster Art (Trending)

If buying paintings isn’t for you, then a very big trend right now, which is also relatively cheap and easy to do, is poster art. Never before has there been as huge a selection to choose from, from daintily drawn numbers to graphic text and shapes in black and white and full colour!  I wanted to show you my faves but, as there are so many, instead here are some posters from some of my favourite people Mariela, Cat and Kerry (click on the pic to get to their webshops):

5. Buy what you love

Above all, the best advice when it comes to adding art to your homes is to buy what you love, unless you’re an aficionado and are buying for investment purposes. Though, even in that case, I would suggest to only buy it if you love it because you will have to look at it everyday. (Art should never be hidden away in my opinion!).

Friday Faves: Things That Make You Go Mmmm

Waaah! It’s been a lovely week and a sad week, with lots of you playing our decorate with plant challenge (here + 7 practically unkillable indoor plants in case you missed it), good news of baby panda triplets born in China Zoo and other such delight.

Yet we also lost a big one, Robin Williams, and that reminded us of daily struggles of depression and the fact that mental illness is still a taboo, even with so many of us suffering.
